What I Learned From a Week in Playa del Carmen
Before I stayed in Playa del Carmen, I mostly thought of it as a convenient dot on the Riviera Maya map.
After spending a week there in 2025, I understood the appeal much better.
Playa is not somewhere I would automatically send everyone. What I liked was the optionality. You can have a beach day, walk out for dinner, take the ferry to Cozumel, head to a cenote, or decide you are doing absolutely nothing and stay put.
That flexibility is the reason I would choose it.
Quinta Avenida is part of the appeal
Fifth Avenue is the center of the action.
It is pedestrian-friendly and packed with:
- restaurants
- bars
- shops
- cafes
- tourist attractions
- nightlife
If you like being able to leave the hotel and immediately have options, that is a major advantage over an isolated all-inclusive.
If your ideal vacation is six consecutive days at a quiet pool, it may not matter at all.
Playa works best for travelers who want flexibility
I like Playa for someone who wants to mix:
- resort or beach time
- restaurants
- nightlife
- excursions
- independent exploring
You do not have to commit the entire vacation to the property.
That matters.
Cozumel is right there
The ferry makes Cozumel one of the most obvious day trips.
That opens up:
- snorkeling
- diving
- beach clubs
- island exploration
If underwater activities are a priority, I would compare a Cozumel day with other reef options before locking excursions.
Cenotes are one of the best reasons to stay in this region
The Riviera Maya gives you freshwater cenotes that feel completely different from the beach.
Options range from easy swimming spots to cave systems better suited to guided experiences.
If you are doing a week in Playa, I would rather see you do one cenote day than book three nearly identical beach excursions.
Tulum makes sense as a day trip, but think about what you want
Tulum has:
- archaeological sites
- beaches
- restaurants
- boutique hotels
- nightlife
- wellness-heavy experiences
A day trip can show you the highlights.
If Tulum itself is the vibe you want for the entire vacation, staying there may make more sense than commuting back and forth.
Beaches can vary
This is something glossy destination guides tend to underplay.
Beach conditions along Riviera Maya can vary by location, season and weather.
Seaweed can be a factor.
That does not mean "do not go."
It means I would not choose a hotel based on one perfectly edited beach photo from three years ago.
Where I would stay
Stay in Playa itself if:
- walkability matters
- you want restaurants outside the hotel
- nightlife matters
- you want easy ferry access
Stay at a Riviera Maya resort if:
- the resort is the vacation
- you want larger pools and grounds
- all-inclusive matters
- quiet matters more than town access
Stay closer to Tulum if:
- that atmosphere is specifically what you want
- you care more about Tulum than Playa
- you are comfortable with different logistics
Airport transfers
Cancún International Airport is the main gateway.
On my 2025 trip, I had a scheduled transfer from Playa del Carmen back to CUN on departure day, and I would absolutely recommend arranging airport transportation rather than improvising it.
It is a small detail until you are standing outside a hotel with luggage and a flight.
Then it is the only detail.
My take
Playa del Carmen is strongest for travelers who want options without constantly changing hotels.
You can make the trip very active or very easy.
The key is choosing the right base.
